Local Colors began in the fall of 1989 as a group of local artists who rented a small retail space on Main Street in Gloucester for the holidays. The goal was to promote the work of artists in and around Cape Ann, on the North Shore of Boston, Massachusetts.

Those initial couple of months stretched into a few more and eventually that small group of artists decided to make it official. Bylaws were drafted, and Local Colors Artists' Cooperative was born.  Local Colors quickly expanded and added more artists. Eventually, the artists outgrew the space and moved to another location further up Main Street. That gallery served as home to Local Colors for six years until a fire forced the relocation to its current space at 121 Main Street in downtown Gloucester. We've been at this location for over 29 years. Local Colors has flourished for almost 35 years making it Cape Ann's oldest Artists' Cooperative.

The Co-op's light-filled gallery offers a dynamic selection of original art, including hand-painted oils and watercolors of local scenes, photography, jewelry, pottery, original stained glass art, fabric art, sculpture and much more. One of the artists is always on duty.

We're an ever changing community and always looking for talented makers, designers and artists to share this hands on and unique experience. If you’re interested in joining, read more.
